“Seeing leads to remembering, remembering leads to doing”
On January 27, 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp was liberated. For many years the Holocaust has been commemorated worldwide on this date. That is why a Remembrance-lecture will be given by Ronald Leopold, director of the Anne Frank Foundation, on Sunday, January 28 in the Groningen Synagogue. Leopold entitled his lecture “Seeing leads to remembering, remembering leads to doing”.
The lecture in Synagogue Groningen on International Holocaust Remembrance Day was given in previous years by Ron van Hasselt (2020), Bert Jan Flim (2022) and Astrid Sy (2023). In 2024 the lecture will be given by a former resident of the city of Groningen. Ronald Leopold was born in Groningen in 1960. From 1978 to 1985 he studied history at the University of Groningen and during his studies he lived in Budapest for two years, where he met his wife. Since 1985 he has lived in Amsterdam with his wife and daughter. After his studies, he held various positions at the General Pension Fund for Civil Servants, where he was involved, among other things, in the implementation of legislation regarding war victims. In 1990 he moved to the Pension and Benefits Council, which he led from 2006. Ronald Leopold has been director of the Anne Frank Foundation since January 1, 2011.
The Anne Frank Foundation was founded on May 3, 1957, partly thanks to Otto Frank, Anne's father. The foundation is an independent non-profit organization that manages and opens up Anne Frank's hiding place. The foundation is also responsible for drawing attention to Anne Frank's life story. Today, the Anne Frank House is one of the most visited museums in Amsterdam.
